Eidos Montreal had been developing a Legacy of Kain reboot prior to the studio’s acquisition by Embracer, but the effort was canceled after roughly a year of work. According to CVs from former Eidos Montreal staff and sources speaking to Insider Gaming, the title was a “Dark Fantasy ARPG” built around a vampire property and emphasized melee combat and parkour. Internally the project was known as P16. Sources said the cancellation followed Embracer’s buyout and that the IP was transferred back to Crystal Dynamics. It is unclear whether Crystal Dynamics pursued any follow-up work with the property after the handoff.
Insider Gaming described the canceled projects as several years old and not connected to the recent rounds of layoffs at Eidos Montreal. The reporting notes there was already some barebones gameplay in place during P16’s short development window. The report adds that Eidos Montreal has had multiple other cancellations in recent years, including a project referred to as P17. Staff told Insider Gaming the studio has been steered toward outsourcing work on titles such as Grounded 2 and Fable, and that a request to support Kojima Productions’ Overdose was declined because it would have required some team members to relocate to Japan.
Separately, sources described a large internal Eidos Montreal project that started around 2019 and has drawn “hundreds of millions” in investment. Those sources said the cost makes cancellation unlikely despite concerns about whether the project will recoup its budget. The full picture of what this means for Eidos Montreal and the Legacy of Kain IP remains unresolved. Insider Gaming’s reporting places the P16 cancellation a few years ago and identifies the transfer of the IP back to Crystal Dynamics as the key outcome.
