Earthion 16-Bit Shooter Lands on PS5 and PS4 Next Week

Ancient's retro shooter Earthion is confirmed for PlayStation on 18th September with physical editions

Earthion from legendary Japanese developer Ancient is confirmed for modern PlayStation consoles, arriving on 18th September. The announcement frames the game as a Genesis-style shoot-’em-up with a soundtrack by Yuzo Koshiro and physical editions headed to retailers.

The project began as a 16-bit-minded title and has gathered strong praise on PC storefronts, with impressions and a Steam review trail visible online; a hands-on look by Time Extension captured early reactions and performance on Steam Deck and PC, and is available as a set of impressions at Time Extension.

Pure retro bliss. The game’s visuals and design were created with 16-bit hardware limits in mind, yet the PlayStation ports promise a clean presentation free from needless compromises. Fans should note that while Earthion was built with 16-bit hardware in mind, the PlayStation ports will include native resolution scaling and quality-of-life toggles aimed at modern screens and controllers. That long lineage of careful design is why physical editions were arranged through collectors and specialty retailers.

Physical copies are available from Limited Run Games, which lists several boxed options including a Collector’s Edition and accessory bundles. Trailer and footage from the Steam release give a clear sense of the game’s pacing and boss encounters.

September already looks busy, but classic-minded shooters like Earthion rarely get a modern release with this much care. Expect a tight, challenging run when it lands on 18th September and on PS5 and PS4.
