Electronic Arts will turn off the online servers for Need for Speed: Rivals on PS4 beginning October 7, 2025. This means that after that date, any multiplayer or online features will no longer be accessible in the game.
While this might disappoint fans who enjoy competing against others online, the game will still have its offline mode, where you can race against AI opponents. So, the single-player experience remains intact, unlike some other titles that have lost all functionality following server shutdowns.
The announcement comes from a rather discreet Online Service Shutdown page on EA’s website. Interestingly, the PS3 version of Need for Speed: Rivals is not currently listed for server closure, so its online status remains unchanged for now.
The game originally blended elements from Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit and Need for Speed: Most Wanted, offering players the choice to be racers or cops in an open world environment. Back at launch, it was well received, earning a 7/10 for its competitive dynamic that kept races tense and entertaining whether online or offline.
After October 7, expect your open world to be populated only by AI racers and cops instead of real players. It’s a bit of a change, especially for those who enjoyed the online competition.
- Online servers shut down: October 7, 2025
- Platform affected: PS4 (PS3 version not confirmed)
- Offline single-player mode remains functional
- Game combines racer and cop gameplay in an open world
