EA has clarified its crossplay plans for Battlefield 6, stating that there will be no console-only crossplay. Company representatives explained how matchmaking will favor console opponents while still allowing PC players into the pool. They outlined what happens when crossplay is disabled on consoles ahead of the October 10 launch. It would use a model called preferred crossplay, where console matchmaking prioritizes players on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S before pulling from PC.
An EA representative told Dexerto that there will be no console-only crossplay. When crossplay is enabled, matchmaking will favor matching a console player with other console players, but PC users will remain part of the matchmaking pool, and PC players will not have an option to disable crossplay.
When a console player disables crossplay on their machine, matchmaking will limit matches to the same platform (PS5 vs PS5, Xbox Series X|S vs Xbox Series X|S), and squadding across platforms will not be possible while that option is turned off. That means the original description of preferred crossplay stands as the accurate representation of multiplayer behavior, though some players have pushed for a dedicated console-only matchmaking option in a future update.
