Dune: Awakening, Funcom’s highly anticipated survival MMO, will be released on May 20. Unlike other MMOs, it will not launch in an early access phase. Instead, players can expect a full launch without any subscription fees.
The creative director, Joel Bylos, shared insights into the game’s post-launch strategy in a recent video. He clarified that Dune: Awakening will provide regular free updates, including new content, features, and improvements focused on player experience.
“The key things that you need to know about Dune: Awakening’s launch are that it will not launch in early access and it will not have a monthly subscription,” Bylos stated. “It will receive regular free updates, including new content, new features, and quality-of-life improvements.”
In addition to these updates, players can purchase optional DLCs with each major update release. A season pass offering four post-launch DLCs will also be available for those interested.
This decision to skip early access is notable within the survival game sector. Historically, many titles have opted for this route to gather feedback and refine gameplay over time before reaching a full version—often increasing the price upon complete release. However, Dune: Awakening, which has been developing for six years with various closed beta tests over the past year, aims for a full rollout at $50.
For those eager to jump into the action sooner, purchasing one of the higher-tier editions priced at $70 or $90 grants five days of current access starting May 15. Both premium versions include the season pass and extra cosmetic items.
“Sure, this allows people to get into the game early,” said Bylos. “But it also helps us to make sure we can balance the server load as people come into the game through launch for the best possible experience.” Players seeking a fresh start can join new servers when Dune: Awakening officially launches on May 20.
The game was designed with controller compatibility in mind but is initially scheduled for PC release only. Console versions for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 are expected later but lack specific dates at this time.
