Diablo 5 confirms 3 classes and promises its largest launch roster yet

Blizzard is also rebuilding Sanctuary with changing regions, a traveling NPC caravan, and Diablo 2-inspired loot for the spring 2029 release window.

Diablo 5 has three confirmed classes, with the returning Demon Hunter and Monk joined by the all-new Plague Knight. Blizzard also says the sequel will launch with more classes than the combined launch rosters of every previous Diablo game. The game is planned for a spring 2029 release window and remains a work in progress.

Developers outlined the sequel during a 30-minute Diablo panel at BlizzCon 2026. The discussion covered a version of Sanctuary that changes between visits, a traveling caravan that replaces traditional towns, and loot systems that bring back several ideas from Diablo 2.

Sanctuary will keep changing

Diablo has won the battle against humanity, and Sanctuary has fallen under his control. Set 100 years after Diablo 4, the sequel follows the apocalyptic destruction of the world and a campaign that includes restoring the western continent and Westmarch. Diablo himself will be a full character in the story rather than a boss reserved for the end.

Procedurally generated dungeons and open-world regions will change each time players return to them. Familiar locations should therefore offer a different route and rhythm across repeated visits instead of turning every trip through Sanctuary into the same journey.

Towns will no longer provide the usual structure for the campaign. Players will travel with a caravan of NPCs encountered throughout the story, including a treasure goblin who joins the group. Sidequests will come from the people in that caravan, while the fallen state of Sanctuary means towns and safe zones will not offer the same dependable refuge as before.

Three classes are confirmed

The Demon Hunter and Monk will return in Diablo 5, while the Plague Knight will bring a new disease-based power fantasy to the series. Game director Joe Shely described the heavily armored class as a “walking death” that travels through the world spreading disease and consuming it for power.

Blizzard has not shared the Plague Knight’s abilities or build details yet, but its core identity is already clear. The class gives players another grim way to handle groups of demons while fitting the darker direction of a Sanctuary controlled by Diablo.

Blizzard said the launch roster will contain more classes than the combined launch rosters of every previous Diablo game. The full lineup has not been presented, but that promise makes class choice one of the sequel’s defining parts.

Diablo 2 ideas are returning to loot

Items will progress through tiers, beginning with simple gear and gaining more complex properties as characters advance. Belts and set items are also returning, adding equipment types that have been absent from Diablo 4’s current structure.

Inventory space will work differently as well. Items will occupy multiple slots based on their type, much like they did in Diablo 2. Blizzard is also testing equipment that requires characters to reach certain stat thresholds before they can use it.

Blizzard plans to share regular development updates starting in 2027, and player feedback will continue to influence the game before launch. For now, Diablo 5 is rebuilding several familiar systems instead of simply adding another layer to Diablo 4.
