A recent Reddit discussion has pushed Diablo 4‘s pet pickup problems back into the spotlight as faster builds and new seasonal loot make the current system feel increasingly impractical. Players report that pets only grab a handful of items, only inside the player’s visual range, and often only after their animation completes, which means sprinting ahead during speed-clears regularly leaves runes and other tiny drops on the floor.
Animus orbs require the player to walk directly over them, and a brief spawn delay after elite kills makes it easy to miss orbs when you move too fast. Community posts argue pets should either auto-collect or mirror the simpler auto-loot behavior seen in older Diablo titles so speed-focused builds do not have to backtrack. Runes are singled out as particularly problematic because ranged or fast builds frequently kill enemies offscreen and miss the pickup entirely. One suggested fix from players is to send any missed runes to the final chest at the end of an encounter, the same way some games return missed loot.
Ideas on the table include:
- Pets picking up runes, Animus orbs, gems, and all small drops
- Offscreen collection when players move too fast
- Vacuum-style collection during fast clearing
- Custom loot filters linked to pets
- Pets auto-salvaging or stashing items
- Sending pets to sell marked junk
- More interactive or combat-supporting pet roles
Players frequently compare Diablo 4’s current pet behavior to Torchlight and Diablo 3’s updated systems, arguing the current pets feel mostly cosmetic rather than like functional helpers during farming runs. It is unclear if Blizzard Entertainment plans to expand pet functionality, but the conversation has gained traction with two major farming events active and players pushing for quality-of-life improvements.
