Destiny 2 Dev Responds to Claims of Hidden Nerfs in The Edge of Fate Expansion

Bungie denies deliberately hiding changes after players spot missing updates in patch notes.

Destiny 2‘s newest expansion, The Edge of Fate, has stirred up some controversy with players noticing missing changes in the official patch notes. Bungie has responded to accusations that these omissions were intentional stealth nerfs, stating they never planned to hide any adjustments.

The expansion launched amidst notably low concurrent player numbers on Steam, and the community has been vocal about various mechanical changes. The patch notes Bungie released for The Edge of Fate were among the longest they’ve ever produced, yet players found several changes not listed, which sparked concerns about transparency.

On the Destiny 2 subreddit, users compiled detailed lists of these supposed stealth nerfs and buffs. One notable example involves the Warlock class, where some players pointed out a major nerf to the Touch of Flame ability. Another user mentioned that Incinerator Snap builds were “gutted completely,” highlighting frustration within parts of the community.

In response, Destiny 2’s communications manager, Dylan Gafner, took to Reddit to address the issue. He explained that teams have been reviewing player reports to identify gaps in the patch notes and promised updates on the missing details as soon as possible. Gafner firmly denied that Bungie intended to slip changes under the radar, saying, “We would be completely out of our minds if we thought we could slip something under the rug without players noticing.” He acknowledged that some processes need improvement but emphasized the lack of any deliberate concealment.

Gafner also pointed out that the changelog for The Edge of Fate is “one of (if not THE) longest patch notes submissions we’ve had.” He suggested that the sheer volume might have contributed to some omissions, alongside the impact of Bungie’s recent layoffs of 220 employees toward the end of last year, which likely affected documentation and internal processes.

It’s understandable that players might suspect Bungie of trying to hide changes, especially given recent controversies, such as the independent artist’s accusation that Bungie used her designs without permission for the Marathon game. That incident caused major backlash and delayed the game’s release indefinitely, damaging community trust.

Still, it seems more plausible that the missing patch notes resulted from organizational challenges rather than intentional deception. Gafner said there isn’t a specific timeline for fully updating the patch notes, but assured Warlock changes will be prioritized. He also mentioned that some exotic ammo backpack changes, like those affecting Queenbreaker, were not detailed enough in the initial notes and will be clarified later.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this situation. Do you believe Bungie is being transparent enough, or do you feel the community’s concerns are valid? Please share your thoughts in the comments below.
