Dementium: The Ward, a DS horror once pitched as Silent Hill, arrives on Steam Oct 27

Renegade Kid's cult DS survival horror gets a remaster on Steam with 4K and retro display options; the studio originally pitched it to Konami as a Silent Hill title

Dementium: The Ward, the cult survival horror originally released on Nintendo DS in 2007, is being reissued for PC on Steam on October 27. The remaster supports native 4K, but also offers a suite of retro display options, including CRT scan-lines and an authentic 240p mode for anyone chasing handheld-horror nostalgia.

The game was developed by Renegade Kid and directed by Jools Watsham. The studio first pitched the concept to Konami as a potential Silent Hill entry, a pitch Watsham has discussed in interviews with NintendoLife. Years later, the team used the engine from Dementium 2 to mock up a third-person demo and try again, but Konami declined to pursue horror on the DS, according to a separate account at IGN.

Back in 2007, the DS offered very few actual horror experiences, and Dementium earned a cult following for putting an amnesiac protagonist in a creepy hospital full of zombies and oversized worms, armed with a mix of firearms and a trusty nightstick. The new trailer leans into a grittier, Doom 3-esque presentation more than the foggy, psychological tones of Silent Hill 2, so the game sits in its own mythos while still carrying that handheld-era charm.

Those wanting to prep a Steam Deck for spooky handheld vibes should be happy to hear about the retro display toggles. The remaster’s Steam page confirms the October 27 launch and the modern/retro display choices, and it will arrive on Steam at this store page.

While fans of classic survival horror might draw the obvious Silent Hill line, the series’ modern resurgence and conversations around the franchise – such as recent hints from original creators – make Dementium’s history feel like a small, intriguing footnote in a larger horror conversation. For background on the series and its creators, see Silent Hill Creator Keiichi Toyama Hints at New Game, Not a Slitterhead Sequel.

If the remaster delivers on atmosphere and a faithful handheld presentation, it could be a nice low-fi counterpoint to modern AAA horror, and a reminder that constrained hardware can inspire big ideas.
