Death Stranding 2 Review: Kojima Productions Doubles Down on Delivery and Combat

Death Stranding 2 builds on its predecessor with longer hauls, deeper combat, and stunning PS5 visuals.

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach arrives with a strong sense of confidence from Kojima Productions, following up on a game that has found greater appreciation over time. This sequel expands on everything the original began, offering longer journeys, more intense combat, and a gripping narrative that ties together Mexico and Australia in a post-apocalyptic world.

The core gameplay loop remains focused on delivering cargo across vast open spaces. Still, these trips now include unexpected firefights and close-quarters combat that make the original’s encounters feel like a rough draft. The story shifts emphasis from world-building to the characters themselves, with familiar faces like Sam Bridges (Norman Reedus), Fragile (Léa Seydoux), and Higgs (Troy Baker) returning, alongside new characters such as Neil (Luca Marinelli), whose role adds emotional depth and mystery.

Players will find the game’s story easier to follow, thanks to a helpful Corpus menu that refreshes knowledge of the series’ distinct elements. The narrative stays intimate despite its global stakes, focusing on Sam’s close relationships while reconnecting isolated populations through the chiral network.

Deliveries remain the backbone of gameplay, with hundreds of missions across diverse terrains. Dynamic world events like earthquakes, flash floods, forest fires, and sandstorms introduce fresh challenges that can drastically alter your route and damage player-built structures. The social strand system returns, allowing players to share resources like bridges and vehicles, while a new monorail system speeds up travel and cargo transport.

Combat sees the most notable improvements. Unlike the original, where fighting was often discouraged, Death Stranding 2 offers satisfying and varied options. Rubber bullets prevent catastrophic voidouts, and you can approach enemies with stealth or all-out firepower. The arsenal rivals many shooters, including silenced guns, interesting melee gloves, and a range of grenades for distractions. Enemy bases are no longer something to avoid but opportunities to engage and loot.

The game’s visuals stand out as some of the best on PS5, with landscapes of Mexico and Australia rendered in impressive detail that could be mistaken for nature documentaries. Character models and environments are lifelike, and the game runs smoothly in both Quality and Performance modes on PS5 Pro, maintaining steady frame rates.

Voice acting and music contribute significantly to the atmosphere. Elle Fanning and Luca Marinelli provide standout performances, adding emotional weight to the story. The soundtrack introduces songs at moments that feel rewarding, complementing gameplay and story progression.

One minor letdown is underusing the PS5 DualSense controller’s current features. The haptic feedback and adaptive triggers don’t differentiate between weapon types, limiting immersion in combat.

Death Stranding 2 effectively balances its narrative and gameplay, blending cargo runs with combat encounters and social connectivity into a cohesive experience. It’s a thoughtful sequel that stays true to its roots while meaningfully expanding the world and mechanics.
