Deadlock’s recent Alpha update brought a clear and measurable rebound in player activity, with peaks moving from roughly 14,000 to as high as 47,000 after new heroes, a map, and UI work. That matters because it shows the Alpha can still pull players back and sustain them ahead of full release.
Deadlock earns players back with massive update
So, why are so many people returning to Deadlock all at once if the previous updates didn’t win them over?
At launch, the game’s player count briefly approached 200k, then fell to around 10k before this update, which is a big swing for an Alpha project. Hmm.
The team released 6 new heroes in less than two weeks, added new music, overhauled menus and the UI, and introduced a completely new map. Players who’d stopped playing have found the changes approachable again, and the latest roster has raised engagement across many matches. It works.
Part of the retention comes from the voting mechanic: players earn votes for the next character by playing matches, so playing and deciding are tied together. That loop gives players a concrete reason to return and keep playing for the short term.
The update also reworked core systems, an easier-to-access item system, shifting the map to three lanes instead of four, and several quality-of-life fixes, which together make the game feel fresher for people who haven’t played since last year. The changes helped a bit.
The Doorman is the newest Deadlock character at the time of writing, and he’s probably the closest thing we’re ever going to get to Portal 3.
After the update, Deadlock went from about 14k peak players to roughly 28k the day after, then was catapulted to 47k according to SteamDB. You can view the SteamDB chart here.
Some context on the Alpha’s schedule: updates had slowed to larger, less frequent patches before this burst of additions, a shift away from quick fixes and toward broader content drops. That approach seems to be paying off in returning players at the moment.
Would this momentum be enough to carry the game all the way to a successful full release? Only time and further updates will tell.
