DayZ Badlands Will Let Survivors Rebuild Ruins and Lock Down New Bases

The upcoming Nasdara map will feature more than 5,000 rebuildable houses, new construction materials, and code locks powered by V9 batteries.

DayZ Badlands is adding a rebuilding system that will let survivors restore ruined houses, barricade individual rooms, and turn parts of Nasdara into player-made bases. Bohemia Interactive detailed the feature in its Week 76 development blog, while also confirming that the expansion is planned for an October release.

The system is built around the idea that every server should develop its own history. A town near a spawn point could be fully restored and heavily defended on one server, yet remain a pile of rubble on another. Individual buildings can also have different owners and uses, from a squad headquarters surrounded by fences to a small hideout claimed by one player.

Wells will be part of this evolving environment too. Some may need repairs before survivors can draw drinking water, giving players another reason to work together or take responsibility for useful locations.

More Than 5,000 Houses Can Be Rebuilt

Nasdara will contain approximately 20 variants of damaged houses. Players will discover which structures can be rebuilt by finding them in the world, with opening the inventory indoors serving as an early clue.

The homes fall into two broad visual groups: mud houses and stone houses. Their appearance reflects the background of their former occupants, but the difference is cosmetic. A building’s durability will instead depend on the materials used during restoration and how much damage it had when players found it.

Some structures will need large quantities of supplies, including repairs to parts of the roof. Others may only require a door and windows. Restoration is optional, so players can repair a single room, block an entrance, or secure only the sections they need.

More heavily damaged houses will appear farther from cities and areas with regular foot traffic. Those locations require more resources, but they can offer quieter positions for players looking to establish a base. Clearing rubble from badly damaged buildings can also provide some of the materials needed for construction.

Brick, Mortar, and Mixed Defenses

A new trowel will accompany brick and mortar, joining familiar resources such as logs, planks, and metal sheets. Survivors can combine these materials rather than committing to one construction style.

  • Wooden restoration
  • Brick restoration
  • Wooden structures with sheet metal windows and doors
  • Brick walls used to barricade doors

The same house can look very different depending on how much work players put into it. One base might use wooden walls and metal fittings, while another could rely on brick barriers and a smaller secured section.

Code Locks Come to DayZ Badlands

DayZ Badlands will also introduce code locks for rebuildable doors and existing fences. The feature is designed to work with controllers, bringing functionality that PC players have already seen through community mods to console players as well.

Each lock requires a charged V9 battery. When the battery runs out, the lock will stop working and unlock automatically. Players can check the battery from the back of the lock while indoors, so keeping the system powered will become another part of base maintenance.

Locks can be damaged when they are not attached to a door and require electronic kits for repairs in that state. Once attached to a door, they should be indestructible, according to the development blog.

Brute-force protection will also limit repeated PIN guesses. After enough failed attempts, the lock will temporarily refuse new entries and display a warning. The protection becomes longer with continued failures, then resets after a correct PIN, enough time has passed, or the lock is opened from inside.

The rebuilding system is still in development, and the team warned that the details can change before release. The October launch window gives survivors a little time to decide whether their dream base is a fortified stone house, a quiet rural hideout, or one very stubborn room behind a code lock.

Two videos from the development blog show the rebuilding system and its teaser in action:
