Danganronpa 2 nearly vanished after weak sales, and its creator considered quitting
Kazutaka Kodaka said the original team was split across other projects before Danganronpa Zero helped keep the series alive.

Danganronpa creator Kazutaka Kodaka said he considered leaving the game industry after Spike Chunsoft initially rejected a sequel to the original killing game.
In a post on X, Kodaka recalled that the first game did not bring in much money after its release. The visual novel launched as a PlayStation Portable exclusive, which made it difficult for the team to recover its development costs.
ダンガンロンパ発売後、当初そこまで売上が伸びずに「2は作らない」という事を告げられるのと同時に、チームはそれぞれ別のプロジェクトに割り振られてバラバラに。…

With a second game off the table, the original team was divided and assigned to other projects. Kodaka had previously worked on established series such as Clock Tower, Dragon Ball, and Detective Conan, but developing an original series had changed what he wanted from his career.
He said he did not want to move on to another project and even thought about quitting. That changed when he heard that a Danganronpa Zero light novel might be possible. Kodaka went to his boss about the idea, giving him a way to continue working on the series while the first game kept finding more players.
How Danganronpa 2 came back
Sales of the original Danganronpa eventually became steady enough for Spike Chunsoft to reconsider a sequel. Kodaka was already revisiting the setting while writing Danganronpa Zero, so he had a foundation for the next game’s story when development moved forward.
The sequel also gave Kodaka room to take the series in a different direction. He described the first game as having a gloomy, claustrophobic mood, while Danganronpa 2 moved toward more energetic, shonen manga-inspired storytelling. The contrast helped the follow-up stand apart from the original rather than simply repeat its formula.
That sequel might never have existed if the light novel had not created more time for the series to build an audience. Danganronpa 2 is now regarded by many fans as a favorite entry, and the game is due to receive an alternative timeline in Danganronpa 2×2 in 2027.
