CD Projekt has officially announced that Cyberpunk 2—previously known as Project Orion—has moved into the pre-production stage. While this is an interesting confirmation for fans, it also means the game is still quite far from release, with estimates pointing toward 2030 or later before it hits shelves.
We’ve known for a while that a new Cyberpunk game was developing, especially since CD Projekt opened a new studio focused on the project in Boston. However, pre-production is still an early phase where concepts and plans are finalized, rather than full development kicking off.
During a recent earnings call, CD Projekt’s chief financial officer, Piotr Nielubowicz, highlighted this milestone as a major moment for the company. He pointed out that the Phantom Liberty expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 has sold to 10 million players since its release 20 months ago, showing the community’s ongoing interest in the Cyberpunk universe.
“Several weeks ago, Cyberpunk 2 wrapped up its conceptual phase and entered pre-production,” Nielubowicz said, congratulating the team for reaching this stage. It’s a reminder that the franchise still holds much promise and attention within the gaming world.
Meanwhile, CD Projekt also focuses heavily on The Witcher 4, which began full production in late 2024. Still, Cyberpunk 2 will receive increased attention throughout 2025, with joint CEO Michał Nowakowski mentioning that recruitment for the Cyberpunk 2 team will be a top priority next year.
When asked about the possible launch window, Nowakowski didn’t provide a specific date but suggested that based on previous projects, it’s reasonable to expect a four—to five-year development cycle from pre-production to release. That would put Cyberpunk 2’s launch around late 2030 or early 2031. He did caution that every project is different, and many factors can influence the timeline, so it’s not set in stone.
So, while it’s interesting to have official news on Cyberpunk 2 finally, patience will be required. Are you ready to wait nearly a decade for the next chapter in Night City? What changes or features are you hoping to see in this follow-up? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
