Compulsion Games Is Now Listed as South of Midnight’s Steam Publisher

The storefront credit may reflect a completed separation from Xbox, although the listing alone does not confirm the studio's wider business relationship.

Compulsion Games is now listed as the publisher of South of Midnight on Steam, a storefront change that may signal the studio’s separation from Xbox has reached its final stage. Eurogamer reported on the updated publisher credit as Xbox continues working through its major restructuring.

The change was also highlighted in a Reddit discussion. Rather than listing Xbox as the publisher, the Steam page now places Compulsion Games in that role for its own game.

What the publisher change confirms—and what it does not

Compulsion Games was one of two studios reportedly returning to independent status during the restructuring, with Double Fine being the other. Ninja Theory and Undead Labs also left the Xbox division, although their new ownership had not been disclosed. Arkane Lyon was reportedly in talks to leave Xbox as well, but its situation remained unclear.

A storefront publisher field is a clear public sign that the publishing arrangement has changed, but it does not explain the full corporate details behind that change. The listing alone cannot confirm whether Compulsion has formally left Xbox, how the studio’s ownership is structured, or whether more announcements are planned.

If the new credit reflects the final step of the restructuring, Compulsion Games would now be handling the publishing side of South of Midnight instead of operating under Xbox’s previous publishing arrangement. For now, the Steam listing is the clearest visible indication of that transition.
