Here’s an incredible story in the climbing game world: Cairn, a detailed mountaineering sim, just smashed through 500,000 demo downloads after getting a nod from the devs behind the climbing megahit Peak. It’s refreshing to see such genuine support between indie developers, and it seems to have paid off.
So, what kicked this off? The Game Bakers, creators of Cairn, shared a clip on X (formerly known as Twitter) showing Peak’s iconic plushie, Bing Bong, cleverly added as an item in Cairn. If you don’t know Bing Bong, it’s a hilarious, meme-worthy plushie you have to carry throughout Peak to unlock an achievement, kinda like the famous Garden Gnome from Half-Life 2.

Landfall Games, the team behind Peak, fired back on X, calling Cairn “peak”, a cheeky compliment that sparked even more talk. Then, just a day later, The Game Bakers announced Cairn’s demo had crossed the half-million download mark. Wow, that’s some serious traction!
Both games focus on the nitty-gritty of climbing, like managing fatigue and resources, but they’re pretty different vibes. Peak is more of a chaotic, co-op slapstick experience, while Cairn takes a quieter, single-player approach with a deep focus on realistic climbing mechanics. You move each limb manually to find hand and footholds, sounds tricky, but it’s surprisingly intuitive. Think of it as a less frustrating cousin of QWOP, if you can believe it.
