Civilization 7 is free to play on Steam through September 10, giving PC strategy fans a fixed deadline to test Firaxis’ latest 4X game before the trial ends. The official Steam announcement confirms the offer, but it does not list an exact cutoff time.
Access is straightforward. Open the Civilization 7 Steam page, select the “Play Game” button, and wait for the required download. The free period gives players room to see how the game’s turn-based systems feel before deciding whether to buy it.
Anyone who wants to continue after the trial can buy either edition at half price through September 17. The standard edition costs $35, £30, or €35, while the deluxe edition is priced at $50, £45, or €50.
A free trial is particularly useful after Civilization 7’s difficult launch. The game arrived in early 2025 with substantial changes to the familiar formula, a user interface that drew widespread criticism, and performance problems that affected the early experience.
Firaxis has continued working on the game since then. A large update released in May brought a sharp increase in Steam player numbers, although the response remained divided. Civilization 7 still has a “Mixed” Steam rating, with 48% of user reviews marked positive, and its concurrent player count remains close to that of the much older Civilization 5.
Firaxis will also discuss what comes next during a livestream from PAX on September 5, giving players another reason to check in before the free period ends. The promotion was also shared in the original PC gaming discussion.
