Call of Duty vows to overdeliver after Black Ops 7 misfire

Activision admitted the franchise has not met expectations, announced a free weekend with double XP, and said it will pause back-to-back Modern Warfare and Black Ops releases.

Activision acknowledged that Call of Duty “has not met your expectations fully” and pledged to “overdeliver” after Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 underperformed against prior entries, the publisher wrote in a team message this week.

The company framed the comments as part apology and part plan of action. Activision called Black Ops 7 a “great game” but said players need to try it and judge for themselves, and added that it will keep supporting the title with live service updates despite weaker-than-expected sales. The announcement came alongside short-term incentives to get more players into the game. Activision confirmed a free weekend that will include double XP for multiplayer and Zombies starting next week, positioning the promotion in the run-up to the holiday period so more people can try the competitive and co-op modes.

Analysts had highlighted a sharp sales drop for Black Ops 7 in Europe, with figures showing it launched roughly 63 percent behind Battlefield 6 in the region. Activision addressed that shortfall directly and said the studio groups behind Call of Duty are committed to rebuilding momentum. Part of the response is a change to release cadence. Activision said it will no longer run back-to-back Modern Warfare and Black Ops releases. The company described that decision as a way to deliver unique yearly experiences and promised bigger, nonincremental innovation going forward.

“The reasons are many, but the main one is to ensure we provide an absolutely unique experience each and every year. We will drive innovation that is meaningful, not incremental. While we aren’t sharing those plans today, we look forward to doing so when the time is right.”

The message also teased work on the “next era of Call of Duty” and said the publisher believes the franchise’s best days are ahead given the depth of its development teams. Activision made clear it will continue live service support for Black Ops 7 regardless of initial sales performance. Readers who want more background on the game’s post-launch systems can read about the Endgame unlock change that made the mode available to all players from day one. For context on sales performance, see reporting on the title’s European launch sales. Activision’s blog post is available on the official Call of Duty site for the full wording and timeline of the support plan.
