Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Multiplayer Went Live Early, With Maps and Spawns Under Fire
Early criticism has focused on map quality, post-beta spawn issues, and skill-based matchmaking.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s multiplayer opened ahead of schedule overnight, and Infinity Ward confirmed worldwide access in its post announcing the game was live. Before the worldwide unlock, Multiplayer had opened in New Zealand with every launch playlist using Standard matchmaking and no dedicated Open Matchmaking option, as detailed in the New Zealand opening and playlist setup.
The rollout had already given Campaign and DMZ separate early-access windows, while Multiplayer was scheduled to open with the full game’s October 23 launch. Campaign and DMZ access opened first.
CharlieIntel’s October 22 reaction criticized the maps, said spawn problems remained after the beta, and described skill-based matchmaking as far too aggressive.
Modern Warfare 4 MP is … something.
Maps are not that good. Spawns are still broken after beta. And SBMM is cranked up to the max.
We've got a great campaign, good DMZ mode, but a mess for MP so far.

One X user went further, calling it the worst Call of Duty ever after only 30 minutes of play. That is one player’s early verdict, not a settled measure of the multiplayer’s reception.
yeah ive only played for 30 mins but im pretty sure mw4 is gonna go down as the worst cod ever
