Bungie will deprecate Unstable Cores in Destiny 2 and hand players 777,777 cores ahead of the change

Bungie says Unstable Cores will be removed and infusion will revert to Enhancement Cores and Glimmer; a one-time 777,777 Unstable Cores reward will appear in the Tower catch-up chest.

Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate launched on July 15, 2025, and now Bungie says it will remove the game’s controversial new currency, Unstable Cores. According to Bungie’s post on Reddit, infusion will instead cost Enhancement Cores and Glimmer once the change goes through, and the studio is putting a one-time reward of 777,777 Unstable Cores into the Tower catch-up chest at reset to help players transition.

Bungie announced on Reddit that it has “landed on a plan to fully deprecate this currency.” The developer says Unstable Cores ended up being too restrictive across power levels and didn’t encourage interesting build choices so that they will be removed, and infusion costs will return to more familiar resources.

Update regarding Unstable Cores:

If you need a quick explainer: Unstable Cores are the new currency used to infuse gear and raise power beyond the seasonal cap. The issue was that infusing higher-level items ate huge numbers of cores, far more than players could earn from routine dismantling, and players running multiple builds quickly saw totals balloon into the tens of thousands.

To ease the mess while the team removes the system, Bungie says it will:

  • Place a one-time reward of 777,777 Unstable Cores in the Tower catch-up chest available at reset. Bungie recommends signing in and using the currency before it is removed.
  • Ship a minor change that temporarily reduces the number of Unstable Cores required for infusion at higher power levels until the currency is fully deprecated.

Giving everyone 777,777 cores is a blunt fix and the kind of emergency patch that makes you wonder how this shipped the way it did. The reduction in infusion costs should help, but some players who spent long hours grinding may feel shortchanged. Bungie has been forced into reversals before. The studio recently reversed plans to reset player power next season, and these repeated fixes have left the game in a rocky spot.

There’s no removal live yet, as Bungie says the team is “working rapidly” to deprecate Unstable Cores, and the catch-up chest boost and temporary cost cuts are the immediate relief. Players should log in at reset to pick up the chest and start using the cores to avoid losing access to them.

Sound off below if you grabbed the chest or burned through the 777,777 in five minutes, the comment section is open and loud, as always. Follow our updates and shout at us over on X, Bluesky, and YouTube.
