Borderlands 4’s Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford shared some details about these changes during a PAX East panel, highlighting improvements that might make teaming up and collecting gear feel more natural and enjoyable.
Pitchford emphasized that “co-op is a religion to us,” promising what he calls the “best-in-class co-op“. One of the first updates is a revamped lobby system featuring Drop-in and Drop-Out functionality. Players can join or leave multiplayer sessions instantly, without waiting around.
Another handy addition is the fast travel to friends feature. If you find yourself lost or far from your party, you can teleport directly to any friend in your group. The game world is designed without load times, so moving around with friends should feel seamless, even when jumping into boss fights.
Dynamic Level scaling is also part of the update. If your friends are at higher levels, the game will adjust to balance the experience for everyone. Even if players want to try different difficulty settings, the game will handle it smoothly. Plus, instanced loot means each player gets their weapon drops, avoiding the frustration of competing over the same items.
Borderlands 4’s associate creative director, Grant Kao, explained that the loot chase has a more natural progression. Players will gradually add gear as they advance, rather than being overwhelmed by too many options early on. Legendary rarity drops have been reduced to make them feel more unique, and their impact is more noticeable when you find one. Also, every boss and mini-boss will have Dedicated Drops, so you know what to expect from each encounter.
