Here’s the scoop on Borderlands 4: it won’t have a traditional minimap, which initially upset some players. But thanks to the community speaking up, Gearbox included an optional combat radar for those who want it. It’ll be off by default and ready for the game’s September 12 release on Steam and Epic Games Store.
Minimaps can be a bit of a double-edged sword, right? They often pull your focus away from the gorgeous game world, like that annoying TV in the corner of a bar you can’t stop glancing at. But without any navigation aid, you might get lost or miss essential enemy positions.
Gearbox founder Randy Pitchford explained that Borderlands 4 is much bigger and seamless compared to previous games. That made the minimap less helpful in tracking multiple objectives spread over large areas. Instead, the team put effort into a more detailed main map, plus a compass and an EchoBot AI drone that can guide you by painting a path, like casting clairvoyance in Oblivion Remastered. The compass also shows target height, which minimaps usually don’t do well.
Still, some players missed the combat radar’s situational awareness when Gearbox showed the game during preview events. Pitchford admitted the community had a point: combat is all about feel and knowing where enemies are. The team whipped up a combat radar to address that, which will be optional and off by default.
I kind of like this approach. It respects players who want a cleaner screen while giving others the tools to keep track of baddies. The hoverbike teased in previews also looks super cool, so I’m hyped to see how the whole package comes together.
What do you think? Will you stick with the compass and drone or switch on that combat radar?
