Borderlands 4 is finally giving players a way to turn down one of the most divisive characters in the series: Claptrap. This new volume slider feature might be the small win fans need after the controversy over the game’s steep $80 price tag.
If you’ve played any Borderlands game, you know Claptrap. The quirky robot has been with us since day one, acting as comic relief, sidekick, and sometimes just plain annoying. Many players have groaned at his nonstop chatter and wished for a mute button. Well, looks like that wish is coming true, kind of.
Sam Winkler, Borderlands 4’s Narrative Director, revealed that the game will include a dedicated volume slider for Claptrap’s voice. This means players can finally dial down the incessant robotic banter without having to mute the whole game. Sounds like a simple fix, but it’s a feature fans have been begging for years. I mean, who hasn’t wanted to silence Claptrap at least once?

Now, about that $80 price. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford’s remarks that “real fans” will find a way to pay the high cost didn’t exactly win hearts and minds. Yikes. The backlash was pretty fierce, and many longtime Borderlands lovers felt alienated. So, can this Claptrap slider help soften the blow? Probably not by itself, but it’s a step in the right direction, showing the developers are at least listening to some fan feedback.
Honestly, Claptrap’s presence has been a double-edged sword. The character is iconic, sure, but also the source of many eye-rolls. Some players thought Claptrap should’ve been ditched after the first game’s backlash, but the bot stuck around and became the franchise’s mascot. At least now we can keep him quiet when he gets too much.
What do you think? Is a Claptrap volume slider worth $80?
