Treyarch says Black Ops 7’s new Cursed Zombies mode will be opened to players fast, but the studio is holding off on any fan-pleasing super easter egg at launch. The core of the update is simple. Cursed is being built as a more challenging, old-school experience for veterans. You get the stripped-down points system, no mini-map, and you start with a pistol. The mode is built around discovery. Players will hunt relics that unlock permanent modifiers you can toggle to jack up both the challenge and the rewards. The first tangible reward for hitting tier one is a golden armor wall buy that Bianchi says will become “essential” at higher tiers.
Cursed will not be locked behind an arbitrary calendar date. “What we’re going to do is unlock Cursed as soon as someone out in the world completes the main quest in Ashes of the Damned,” Drew said. That means the mode should open quickly once the community finds and completes that main quest. If you want a head start on speculation around Cursed, see our earlier coverage “Call of Duty Black Ops 7 Zombies May Get ‘Cursed’ Classic Mode, Leak Claims” and our beta impressions piece “Black Ops 7 beta shows creative scorestreaks, smooth wall jumping, and classic zombies” for more context.
There are plenty of other takeaways from the Q&A. Treyarch used beta telemetry, especially high-round data, to tune late-game play. Expect augmented support at launch, which Maestas says will help players maintain economy in the long run. Legendary and Pack-a-Punch damage multipliers are getting buffs. SMGs will get a new close-range damage bonus to help them feel meaningful at high rounds.
On the nerf front, the saw trap and shock baton are getting adjustments. The saw trap will cost more and pull enemies less aggressively. The shock baton dealt unexpectedly heavy damage during the beta and is being toned down to leave room for other weapon classes to shine. The team also said it has “seen the discussion” about reintroducing legacy weapons like the Olympia and PPSh-41, but offered no promises.
Enemy lineups will not be a wholesale carryover from Black Ops 6. Drew confirmed creatures like Parasite, Vermin, and Amalgam are not returning. Some enemies do show up. The Doppelghast appears on the Vandorn Farm map as an intermediate threat between Zursa and standard zombies and Ravagers, but it may be map-specific. One juicy bit that will disappoint trophy hunters: the much-discussed super easter egg is not coming on day one. Treyarch acknowledged community interest and said it is exploring the idea, but suggested any large, multi-step super easter egg would arrive later this year rather than at launch. The Q and A also teased a special HUD for Zombies, which Drew describes as “very unique for the mode.” It wasn’t ready to be shown at COD Next, but Treyarch plans to reveal it before release.
Call of Duty Black Ops 7 launches Friday November 14. If you cut your teeth on World at War and the original Black Ops, Cursed looks like the mode designed to make you feel young again and very, very reckless. I will be cheering for whichever player or clan earns that first global clear and flips Cursed live for the rest of us.
