Battlefield 6 players hit with ‘purchase to play’ error as DICE investigates

A launch-day error is preventing some players from accessing Battlefield 6, displaying a “purchase to play” prompt that incorrectly informs owners they must purchase DLC to play the campaign or multiplayer. DICE says it is investigating the report after players began posting problems online. Despite attention on server queues and error codes, the new FPS has been well-received, but some users are reporting that they cannot get into the game at all. Multiple reports indicate that affected players are receiving an error message that explicitly prompts them to purchase DLC to proceed.

A tweet from the official Battlefield Comms account referenced an “installation of content” message. It confirmed that the team is investigating an issue preventing access, with some users encountering an error message stating they need to purchase DLC or similar.

The Battlefield 6 roadmap lays out free seasonal content arriving after launch, beginning with Season 1, Rogue Ops, on October 29, followed by California Resistance in November and Winter Offensive in December. Only cosmetic items have been announced as paid content so far. DICE has acknowledged the problem, and players who already purchased the game should not have to buy additional content to access the core campaign or multiplayer.
