Battlefield 6 developers have marked map design size as something they are reviewing in the latest community update blog, and players are already spotting quieter lobbies on some of the series’ biggest maps.
The community update blog lists map design size as a topic under review and reiterates a focus on maps that offer different ways to play and constant action around every corner. The post says the team will keep monitoring maps and modes while new content arrives in the California Resistance Update.
Community reporting from Battlefield Bulletin suggests that the studio has quietly reduced player counts in Breakthrough from 64 players to 48 players on a handful of large maps. The maps named by the community account include Empire State, Manhattan Bridge, Liberation Peak, New Sobek City, Blackwell Fields, and Siege Of Cairo.
The report is linked directly to a community post and the original notice appears to come from outside official patch notes, so the change does not have the same clarity as a formal update. Here is the community post.

Those reductions, if confirmed across all platforms, would affect the pacing of Breakthrough matches. Reducing player counts trims moments of overwhelming spawn pressure and long chaotic firefights. It can also help performance on lower end hardware and reduce hit registration variance in tightly packed fights. At the same time it changes how a map needs to be designed for flanking and long sightlines, and some players feel Battlefield historically gave more breathing room between engagements.
The developers also said they will continue targeted adjustments similar to what was planned in the Winter Offensive updates and will learn from community creations in Portal. Some of the gameplay issues the team is still working on include bouncy terrain and class active ability glitches and ongoing work on aim assist and hit registration. Whatever the intent, smaller player counts on some Breakthrough maps would be a notable shift from the franchise feel many players expect. The studio has signaled it is watching community feedback closely and will keep adjusting maps and modes over the coming seasons.
