EA is preparing to introduce a new battle royale mode in Battlefield 6. Recent leaks from the Battlefield Labs playtests and dataminers have shed light on what players might expect, revealing a mode similar to Call of Duty: Warzone in several ways.
Battlefield previously experimented with battle royale via Firestorm in Battlefield V, but it struggled to keep up with free-to-play giants like Fortnite and Apex Legends. Later, Battlefield 2042 tried a different approach with its Hazard Zone mode, failing to maintain a player base and seeing its support end within months.
The new mode, developed by Ripple Effect (formerly DICE LA), is still in pre-alpha so that some details might change. However, dataminer temporyal uncovered several interesting features in the game files that give us a glimpse into what’s coming.

Battlefield 6 Battle Royale Features
The mode’s description reads: “Drop into the combat zone and prepare for hostile contact. Loot weapons, gadgets, and call-ins for tactical advantage. Complete missions, secure intel and custom weapon drops, and stay ahead of the collapsing NXC flamefront. Be the last squad standing to win.” Sounds familiar, right?
Missions
Missions act like contracts in Warzone but with a twist: enemy squads can actively counter your missions. For example, if your team starts a mission, a nearby enemy might try to stop you and steal the rewards. Mission types include Marked Player, High Value Assets, and Demolition Crew, each with specific objectives and counters.
Custom Weapon Drops
Similar to Loadout Drops, these are airdropped packages containing your customized weapons. You can find them on the map or earn them by completing missions. However, you can only carry one custom weapon at a time, so you’ll need to find another to swap.
Field Upgrades
Field Upgrades return, functioning like they did in Battlefield 4. You unlock new class abilities by completing missions, getting kills, looting, and gathering intel drives.
Respawning
Death doesn’t mean elimination immediately. Early in the match, you get one free redeployment. Later on, your team can bring you back at Redeploy Points, which are rare loot or mission rewards. If an enemy team activates a Redeploy Point, you can contest it to interrupt their progress.
Oversight System
Instead of just spectating when eliminated, dead players can use the Oversight System to control remote cameras, drones, or turrets. Cameras are available to all dead players, but drones and turrets require your team to capture an Oversight Terminal first.
Looting
The mode features various loot sources: chests, vehicles, and player bodies. Class Chests provide items tailored to your chosen class, while Rare Chests have upgraded weapons, call-ins, and special armor carriers that double your armor capacity, reminiscent of Warzone’s Armor Satchel. Vehicles can be looted but beware of alarms, and ammo or armor plates from enemies can be picked up by walking over their bodies.
Closing Ring
The iconic Firestorm ring returns as the “NXC Flamefront.” It’s a burning ring that keeps collapsing, instantly destroying anything it touches. Players will start burning if they get too close. It’s a dangerous boundary that forces encounters and movement.
Destruction
True to Battlefield’s roots, tactical destruction plays a role. The level of destructibility isn’t fully clear yet—it could be anything from creating holes in walls to leveling entire buildings.
Is Battlefield 6’s Battle Royale Free-to-Play?
Yes. Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson, known for accurate Battlefield 2042 leaks, reports that the battle royale will be free-to-play. It will likely follow a strategy similar to Warzone, offering a free experience alongside the premium Battlefield 6 release.
Developer and Additional Details
Ripple Effect leads development on the battle royale. This studio has supported Battlefield since Battlefield 4 and created 2042’s Portal mode, which is expected to return in Battlefield 6. Byron Beede, a former Call of Duty executive involved with Warzone and CoD Mobile, is said to be behind the new mode.
Concept art from the pre-alpha Battlefield Labs client shows players dropping into the map, breaching buildings, and looting stashes. The setting involves a massive explosion devastating Fort Lyndon and its nearby beach town, with evacuation underway due to toxic fallout.
While the game is expected before April 2026, a reveal is planned for summer 2025. Battlefield 6’s battle royale will likely go head-to-head with Call of Duty’s Black Ops 7, adding an interesting dynamic to the shooter scene.
