Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Players Found a Risky Way to Turn Smoke Bombs Into Explosions

Shooting a deployed smoke bomb with Edward's pistol can damage several enemies, but the blast can hurt him too.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced does not give Edward Kenway explosive grenades, but players have found a way to make smoke bombs erupt on demand. The trick can hit several enemies at once, although mistiming it may send Edward flying instead.

The method is simple. Throw a smoke bomb and wait for it to spread across the area. Then fire Edward’s pistol at the smoke cloud. The shot triggers an explosion that damages nearby enemies and can knock them backward.

Assassin’s Creed fan Zephryss demonstrated the technique in a clip shared on July 21, showing it working in different locations and against groups of enemies. The blast is especially useful when several attackers close in at once, since it can take a chunk of their health before they reach Edward.

The clip’s demonstration also makes the danger clear. Edward needs to keep his distance and avoid firing too close to his own position, or the improvised weapon can become a very fast way to lose health.

Other players have already learned that lesson the painful way. One reaction asked, “THIS. THIS IS HOW I KEEP BLOWING MYSELF UP??” after seeing the trick, while another player said they discovered it accidentally while attempting the trophy involving a berserk enemy in smoke. Both reactions came from players responding to the original clip, including one player’s response and another player’s explanation.

It is not clear whether the interaction was intended by Ubisoft. If it is an unintended exploit, a future update could remove it. For now, players can use smoke bombs as makeshift explosives, provided they remember that Edward is standing inside the danger zone too.
