Arrowhead Studios, known for the successful Helldivers 2, is taking a new direction with its upcoming game by funding it entirely. This means the next title will not be tied to any PlayStation exclusivity, allowing the developer to have complete creative control and release across multiple platforms.
Helldivers 2 has been a bright spot for Sony amid challenges with their live service games. Its cooperative PvE gameplay, where players fight against bugs, bots, and intelligent aliens, has resonated well with fans. The success of this title has given Arrowhead the confidence and resources to move forward independently.
Arrowhead’s Statement on Independence
Shams Jorjani from Arrowhead shared on Discord:
“The wonderful thing is that thanks to the great support of you FINE people Arrowhead’s future is quite bright and we have the freedom to look at some really cool concepts that we couldn’t have otherwise. Game 6 (our next project) will happen the way it will happen thanks to you. ❤️”
“The next game is 100% funded by ourselves so we’ll call 100% of those shots.”
When asked about their experience working with Sony, Jorjani was clear that there’s no ill will:
“No way. Playstation are great. there would be no Helldivers if it wasn’t for them. We’re open to working with them again in the future. they are incredibly game/dev oriented. solid partners. and this is me just saying it like it is. not blowing smoke up their asses.”
This shows that Arrowhead appreciates the partnership but wants to consider projects without platform restrictions. The next game is expected to launch on PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC, though the timeline is still uncertain and could stretch into the next generation of consoles.
What’s Next for Arrowhead?
In January 2025, Helldivers 2’s creative director, Johan Pilestedt, mentioned that planning and conceptualization for the next game had begun. While it’s too early to know the new title, it’s unlikely to be a direct sequel to Helldivers. Arrowhead’s past work includes fantasy games like Magicka and Gauntlet, and a current shooter, The Showdown Effect. With full funding and creative freedom, the possibilities are wide open.
It’s always interesting to see a developer take control of their destiny, and Arrowhead’s next project might be something to look forward to for many platforms. I’m curious to hear what you think about this move. Do you prefer exclusives or games that launch everywhere? Let me know in the comments below.
