Arrowhead is slowing the cadence of major Helldivers 2 updates so the team can focus on stability and performance fixes after the Into the Unjust update caused widespread crashes and degraded performance, game director Mikael Erikkson said in a new video.
Why the delay
Arrowhead admits the Into the Unjust update exposed unaddressed technical debt as the project grew in size and complexity. The studio previously told players it planned to tackle those problems, and now says it will stagger content releases so fixes land first and larger updates arrive in a more stable state.
“We have made the decision to push some of our content and feature updates a little bit into the future while we’re addressing these things to make sure that we can get to a much more stable state that we can believe in,” Mikael Erikkson said. “And also we want to make sure that we update the game in ways that are more stable, in ways that are noticeable for players with every new update that we do.”
Erikkson added that some fixes can be rolled out quickly, while others will need more time. He also called player complaints about crashes and bugs justified and said the team is concentrating resources on preventing a repeat. Arrowhead’s decision trades faster feature releases for a slower, more careful update schedule aimed at reducing crashes and preserving a consistent experience when big updates drop. We should get specifics on which fixes are ready and which require more work in a future update, according to Erikkson.
