All seven Marathon Runner Shells and what they do

Bungie’s Marathon outfits every player in a biosynthetic body called a Runner Shell. Runner Shells are archetypes that shape how a player approaches combat, movement, and looting on Tau Ceti IV. Each Shell includes passive, tactical, and Prime abilities and can be modified with cores and implants to alter or augment its kit.

Bungie released developer material that walks through the Runner Shells and their roles in play, which further explains how cores and implants change the base kits.  Cores are tied to specific archetypes and swap or change abilities, while implants are universal perks that players can mix into any build. All seven Shells listed below are confirmed for launch and support distinct playstyles such as stealth, scouting, healing, movement, and loot focus.

Destroyer

Destroyer is a frontline combat specialist built to engage and hold ground. It has leg thrusters for faster sprints and evasive movement. The Shell carries a riot barricade to fortify a position. Its Prime ability launches heat-seeking missiles that immobilize targets.

Assassin

Assassin is the stealth archetype. Its kit centers on smokes and invisibility. A dive ability negates fall damage and creates a smoke cloud. The Prime ability generates multiple plumes of smoke. The tactical cloaks the Shell in invisibility and also triggers when entering the Prime smoke fields. While invisible, the Assassin may sprint and mantle, but higher speed increases visibility. Actions such as healing or firing briefly break invisibility before it returns.

Recon

Recon is designed to find and track targets. It deploys a spider drone that hunts enemies and explodes, causing an overheat effect that prevents movement and sprinting and applies tick damage. Recon’s Prime sends a detection pulse that marks both AI and player targets for the Shell. Passive abilities show recent enemy footprints and provide signals when Recon receives an enemy ping.

Vandal

Vandal focuses on aggressive movement. It uses micro-jets for a double jump and a longer power slide. The Prime ability overloads the Shell to chain movement moves together. Vandal can also equip an arm cannon that knocks Runners out of cover or off structures to set up follow-up attacks.

Thief

Thief is the loot-focused archetype. Its recharge rates and stats scale with the amount of loot in the backpack. Thief can see containers and enemies through walls within line of sight. The Prime ability deploys a pickpocket drone with a mechanical hook that can knock loot from enemies and grab it. A grappling hook lets the Shell open and pull mid-flight to escape after a theft.

Triage

Triage is a combat medic. It deploys healing drones that provide shields and health and shares any consumable effects it uses with nearby allies. In combat, Triage can overcharge capacitor gauntlets to boost weapons, and battery weapons can EMP targets when their shields are broken.

Rook

Rook is a scavenger Shell that spawns with a random starting loadout. It is only available to join a match in progress as a solo Runner. Rook’s tactical ability lets it blend with UESC forces so they do not render the Shell hostile.

Angel Kicevski

I've spent half of my life playing video games, ever since the competitive 1.6 era. Now I am happily married to Margarita Kicevski, and have two beautiful children. My goal is to deliver fresh news and updates, but most of the time I want to work on guides. Since I have rebooted this website, I am planning on making it huge. Just you wait!
