Albion Online is getting a fresh round of combat balance changes with its Abyssal Depths Patch 2, released on July 23, 2025. These tweaks focus on adjusting weapon cooldowns, damage, and effects to bring a bit more fairness and variety to fights, both in PvP and PvE. If you play this sandbox MMORPG, these updates might shift your weapon choices or combat tactics a little.
Patch Notes – Combat Balance Changes – Version 29.020.1
- Axes
Blood Bandit now fires slower projectiles (about 9% reduction), which should give enemies a better chance to dodge at max range, but its hit detection is more reliable up close and far away. - Cursed Staffs
The Great Cursed Staff’s Area of Decay cooldown drops from 25 to 20 seconds, helping it keep up pressure in small group fights. - Fire Staffs
Flamewalker Staff’s Spontaneous Combustion cooldown increases from 30 to 40 seconds, but hitting enemy players refunds more cooldown (up to 40%), rewarding aggressive play. - Frost Staffs
Instead of nerfing Frozen Surge, the alternatives get buffs: Frostbite loses its 4% bonus damage but gains a stun effect after stacking three times, while Ice Shard range extends slightly from 13 to 14 meters. - Holy Staffs
Lifetouch Staff sees healing per tick lowered (76.8 to 55) but gains longer channel time and range, with a new buff that increases an ally’s damage output by 15%.
Meanwhile, Smite damage is reduced, though its improved cooldown remains. - Maces
Dreadstorm Monarch’s Eye of the Storm cooldown between uses shortens from 2 to 1.5 seconds, and its slow effect strengthens from 20% to 25%. - Quarterstaffs
Black Monk Stave’s Fatal Blade area duration shrinks from 5 to 3 seconds, but damage per tick jumps from 25 to 80 and damage reduction per stack against players rises to 40%. Maximum stacks decrease from 4 to 3, and tick interval slows.
Iron-clad Staff’s Hurricane damage per tick goes up (32 to 55), plus it now grants 0.15 armor and magic resistance for 5 seconds. - Shapeshifter Staffs
Crystalburst on Stillgaze Staff gets a big damage increase (total damage doubles from 54 to 108) with more ticks and shorter intervals.
Hellspawn Staff’s Return from Hell passive now requires at least 3 shift charges and replaces healing based on charges with 18% max health heal, making the second life harder to get. - Spears
Corrupting Steel had its damage-over-time nerf reversed, keeping its DPS role intact with 32 damage per tick over eight ticks. - War Gloves
Forcepulse Bracers changed auto-attack pattern to a faster two-hit combo, cooldown dropped from 20 to 15 seconds, and recasting refunds cooldown based on elapsed time. - Helmets
Hellion Hood no longer allows mobs to be consecutively silenced, preventing players from trivializing some PvE fights by stacking these hoods. - Armors
Specter Jacket’s Self Ignition aura radius expands from 6 to 7 meters, better matching its visual effect.
These changes might catch some players off guard since a few popular builds are receiving nerfs while less-used options get a boost. I find it interesting how they decided to tweak alternatives to Frozen Surge rather than nerf the strongest option directly. It’s a subtle move that could urge more weapon diversity in combat. Also, the Hellion Hood adjustment should make PvE encounters a bit less monotonous.
Curious if these tweaks will shift your favorite setups? I’m definitely going to test the Lifetouch Staff’s new damage buff for allies, it sounds quite promising! What about you? Have you already noticed some differences in your matches or mobs?
