During a high-stakes pay-per-view event, AEW’s “Speedball” Mike Bailey recently paid a heartfelt tribute to the classic video game Chrono Trigger through his custom gear. The colorful design, reminiscent of Frog, one of the game’s favorite characters, marks an interesting fusion of gaming culture and professional wrestling.
Bailey has quickly become one of AEW’s standout talents, gaining acclaim on the independent circuit and even capturing titles in TNA Wrestling. During the recent international championship match against renowned wrestlers Ricochet and Kenny Omega, he debuted a costume crafted by Sway Archer that draws inspiration directly from the legendary RPG.
The choice to honor Frog holds personal significance for Bailey. In an interview with GameSpot, he shared how he identifies with the character: “I am often smaller than my opponents. I have had terrible luck in my pro wrestling career that forced me to take a more difficult path than many others,” they stated. “My martial arts training has taught me to always be humble and respectful. Glenn was cursed and is now a frog, yet he remains an accomplished fighter and a hero. I think our paths are very similar.” This connection showcases how deeply personal storytelling can resonate within wrestling and gaming narratives.
Despite not being familiar with Chrono Trigger, Sway Archer reflected on creating this distinctive look. He noted, “This set was 100% a Speedball idea… If somebody wants something to represent media they enjoy, I will get familiar with it so that a fan who didn’t know the inspiration could identify it.” Archer emphasized his goal of incorporating elements associated with Glenn while ensuring it still felt fresh for fans.
The design features key attributes such as frog-like eyes on the hood and color choices inspired by Glenn’s boots. Most notably, Archer replaced the game’s iconic logo letter “C” on Bailey’s kneepads with an “S” to signify him while maintaining clear ties back to Chrono Trigger.
Chrono Trigger, which celebrated its 30th anniversary earlier this year in March, continues to influence various forms of media as fans reveal their love for its characters and storylines through creative means like Bailey’s attire. Notably, at this same event, fellow wrestler Adam Cole also showcased Witcher-themed gear during his matchup against Daniel Garcia.
This intersection of wrestling and gaming culture highlights not only individual artistry but also broader trends in fandom merging across entertainment mediums, something audiences seem eager to see more often.
