Sony may be working on a PlayStation 6 cooling system that performs more consistently in different console positions. A patent published in June 2026 describes hardware designed to improve heat dissipation when an electronic device is placed vertically or horizontally.
The filing does not name the PS6, and a patent is not proof that the design will appear in a retail console. Still, its focus lines up with one of the recurring concerns around the current PlayStation 5 generation: heat management.
A cooling system built for two console positions
The patent’s central idea is a heat pipe connected to a heat sink and a heat-transfer component. Its lower section extends beyond the edge of that component, which could help the system move heat away from a built-in heating element more effectively.
As described in the WIPO patent filing, the design is meant to “improve cooling capacity” while the device is used in multiple postures. The filing includes diagrams that resemble the PS5, although those images appear to serve as examples rather than confirmation of the final PS6 hardware.
The patent was identified by Tech4Gamers, which connected the filing to Sony’s next console. That connection remains unconfirmed by Sony, so the technology could still be intended for another device or never reach consumers.
What this could mean for the PS6
If Sony uses the system in its next console, the design could help keep cooling performance steadier regardless of whether the machine stands upright or lies flat. That would address a practical part of console ownership without changing how games look or play.
It is also worth keeping expectations in check. Sony files patents for many ideas that never become finished products, and this filing does not provide a release date, price, specifications, or confirmation that the PlayStation 6 exists as the device described. For now, it offers a technical hint rather than a promise.
