A Lost Black Ops Zombies Experiment Surfaces in the PS4 Port
The unfinished mode used a bird's-eye view while still letting players control a character and fight the undead directly.
Fans have uncovered an unfinished Zombies experiment from Call of Duty: Black Ops more than 15 years after the game’s original release. The discovery followed the recent launch of the PlayStation 4 port, which has brought previously unseen material from the classic shooter back into view.
As IGN reported, YouTuber JTAG found gameplay footage of the cut mode and shared it online. The footage shows a rough, unfinished experience built around a top-down camera, giving it the feel of a tower-defense game rather than the usual first-person Zombies format.
That was not the only unusual part. Players could also take direct control of a character and fire at enemies themselves, blending the bird’s-eye structure with the standard shooting that defined Zombies. The build is clearly incomplete, but it offers a look at one of the directions Treyarch considered before settling on Dead Ops Arcade.
There is no indication that the discarded mode will return in a future release. Its late discovery and unfinished state make an official revival unlikely, but the material still shows how many different ideas Treyarch tested while expanding the Zombies formula beyond its original round-based design.
Zombies began in Call of Duty: World at War and later appeared in several forms across the franchise, including the more open-world MWZ mode in the Modern Warfare games. The upcoming Modern Warfare 4 will take a different route. Infinity Ward will bring back DMZ as the main mode outside the campaign and traditional multiplayer, with human opponents taking the place of the undead-focused encounters used in MWZ.
