In the midst of a significant restructuring that saw several layoffs, Bungie, the developer behind Destiny 2, has reached out to its community with a candid update on their future direction and plans.
Describing the weight of their recent decisions, the studio stated, “This has been one of the most difficult weeks in our studio’s history, as we’ve parted ways with people we respect and admire.” Bungie emphasized their ongoing efforts to support those affected, both within and outside their current team.
Addressing concerns about the game’s trajectory, they acknowledged, “We know we have lost a lot of your trust. Destiny needs to surprise and delight. We haven’t done this enough and that’s going to change.” With notable mentions of updates like Lightfall and the forthcoming The Final Shape, Bungie confessed their past shortcomings but remain committed to doing better.
Setting their sights on the horizon, Bungie has a clear aim: “To us the path forward is clear: We need to make The Final Shape an unforgettable Destiny experience.” Drawing inspiration from past successes like Forsaken, The Witch Queen, and The Taken King, the studio is pouring its resources, with over 650 dedicated personnel, into ensuring this vision becomes a reality.
The studio assured, “In the weeks ahead, you’ll be hearing more from us about what’s next on the short-term horizon, beginning with our next Season in late November.” Beyond that, Bungie teased a grander narrative for The Final Shape and the transformative journey they envision for the game’s universe.
Concluding their message with a sense of hope and unity, Bungie expressed, “See you starside,” inviting players to stand with them as they navigate their current challenges and move toward a brighter future.
