The latest data from Circana’s September 2023 video game sales charts has revealed some interesting trends and successes in the US market. Bethesda’s Starfield, the science fiction role-playing game, has come out on top for the month. According to the same data, Starfield is also the seventh best-selling game in the US for the year.
Although available on both Xbox and PC, Starfield saw most of its sales come from the PC version. This is a strong signal that Bethesda’s efforts to create an expansive universe in the sci-fi genre have resonated particularly well with PC gamers.
But it wasn’t just Starfield that got people talking. NetherRealm’s Mortal Kombat 1 was hot on its heels as the second best-selling game of September. This fighting game also landed as the US’s eighth best-selling game of the year. Mortal Kombat 1 led the charts on PlayStation and came in second on both Xbox and PC. Interestingly, despite some issues at its launch, it even secured a third-place ranking on the Nintendo Switch.
EA Sports FC 24 also impacted, debuting in third place on the charts for September. The soccer simulation game showed significant unit and dollar sales growth compared to its predecessor, FIFA 23. Despite being released near the end of the month, it’s already the 14th best-selling game of the year.
The list also included some games that had complex launches but succeeded. Payday 3, for instance, landed in fifth place. Meanwhile, NBA 2K24 and The Crew Motorfest debuted in sixth and seventh places, respectively.
Starfield was the best-selling game of September, instantly becoming the 7th best-selling game of 2023 year-to-date. Starfield ranked as the best-selling title of the month across both Xbox and PC, with PC being its lead sales platform.
