Sony has ended months of speculation by announcing a new PS5 model set to launch this November. Although the internal hardware remains the same, the new model is lighter and takes up less space than its predecessor. One standout feature is the optional, detachable Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive that can be added to the PS5 Digital Edition. The new device aims to give players more flexibility and choices in how they want to enjoy their gaming sessions.
Weighing 18 percent less than the previous version and 24 percent less if you opt for the Digital Edition—the new PS5 model takes up 30 percent less space. It comes with four cover panels, with one board designed to house the Blu-ray Disc Drive. In terms of storage, the new model features a 1 TB SSD, offering plenty of room for games, apps, and media.
The new PS5 with an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive will be priced at $499.99, whereas the Digital Edition will retail for $449.99. For those who purchase the PS5 Digital Edition and wish to add a Blu-ray drive later, a detachable drive will be sold separately for $79.99.
Sony is also launching a new vertical stand compatible with all models of the PS5, available separately for $29.99. A horizontal stand comes included with the console.
Sony has also made it clear that once the inventory of the current PS5 model sells out, the new model will be the only one available for purchase. This marks a shift in Sony’s strategy and signals the company’s confidence in the new design.
Sony promises more updates and details about the new PS5 in the coming weeks. Gamers will have to watch for further announcements, particularly around software compatibility and any special offers or bundles that might accompany the new model’s release.
