With much anticipation surrounding the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Insomniac Games has now shed light on what fans can expect in terms of gameplay length. Contrary to what some might expect, given the sequel’s much larger map, the game will not see a significant increase in playtime. Instead, it’s poised to offer a similar length to its predecessor.
In a recent interview with VG247, Ryan Smith, Insomniac Games’ senior game director, revealed that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is slated to be “in the same ballpark as the first game in terms of overall play time.” While the map of New York will be approximate twice the size of its predecessors, players can anticipate a gameplay experience lasting between 20-25 hours, contingent on their engagement with side content.
Smith emphasizes that with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the objective is not merely to broaden the gameplay experience. Instead, the team at Insomniac is driven to enhance the quality of the content. Their vision is to saturate every moment of the game with rich narrative details, making each mission memorable and integrally tied to the overarching story.
Expounding on this, Smith remarked, “We don’t want this to be an 80-100 hour game, that’s not where we want to be. We want to tell amazing stories, the best we can. We want to make every mission really, really memorable. That’s our goal, rather than going super, super broad.” He also highlighted the importance of embedding story elements in every discovery players make in the game, noting the positive reception of such elements in prior titles.
Fans eager to swing through the streets of this expanded New York won’t have to wait long. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is set to hit the shelves on October 20, exclusively for PS5.
