Diablo 5 Will Turn Its Caravan Into a Moving Base Across a Procedural World

The game is in full production and targets spring 2029, with Diablo already ruling the land when the story begins.

Diablo 5 will replace the familiar safety of a permanent town with a roving caravan, sending players through a procedurally generated world where Diablo has already won. The game has entered full production and is targeting a spring 2029 release window, although Blizzard is still years away from launch.

During a PCGamesN group Q&A, Narrative Director Jennifer Brandes Hepler, Executive Producer Matt Zitterman, and Game Director Joe Shely outlined how the next Diablo aims to change the rhythm of Sanctuary without abandoning its action RPG foundation.

Players will operate out of a caravan instead of settling in a small town. Shely described it as a “point of light moving through the land,” which gives the campaign a very different starting position. Diablo has already taken over the world, but humanity continues fighting from the road while gathering enough strength to challenge him.

Areas will not remain safe simply because players cleared them once. After the caravan leaves, regions can become dangerous again as demons return, giving repeat trips and dungeon runs a changing backdrop. The result should feel less like permanently reclaiming a fixed map and more like maintaining a moving foothold in hostile territory.

Diablo 5 will also use procedural generation instead of following Diablo 4’s static, hand-crafted open world. Blizzard’s stated goal is to preserve the feeling of discovering unfamiliar territory, with the caravan system adding a reason to keep moving rather than treating each region as a problem that can be permanently solved.

That player-focused approach extends to the story. Hepler said the response to Diablo 4’s Lord of Hatred expansion, particularly the feeling that players were central to its narrative instead of simply wandering through it, gave the narrative team confidence in the direction it was taking with Diablo 5.

Blizzard is also considering what happens after the main campaign. Hepler said the ending should leave players feeling that they achieved something while still giving them plenty to do afterward. A caravan that can travel into new territories gives Diablo 5 a clear foundation for that post-campaign future, though Blizzard has not detailed its endgame plans yet.
