Marathon’s March 2027 Evolution Will Connect PvE, PvP, and PvEvP

Bungie also plans a refactored Cradle, deeper shell progression, new alien enemies, more narrative, and an entirely new zone.

Marathon will enter its next major phase in March 2027, when Bungie plans to connect permanent PvE, PvP, and PvEvP experiences into one broader survival framework. The studio is also acknowledging that the game’s launch was more punishing than many players could tolerate, with its uncompromising extraction loop failing to reach the wider audience Bungie wanted. The March update will add a refactored Cradle, deeper shell progression, more narrative, new alien enemies, and an entirely new zone.

Bungie outlined the plan in its new Marathon roadmap on September 24. The studio said player feedback has highlighted three needs, clearer onboarding, more reasons to return, and a future that supports more than the game’s high-stakes extraction format. The March plan follows Bungie’s September 22 outline of its broader survival direction, which identified permanent PvE and Team Deathmatch in December as early steps toward a wider survival experience.

Bungie’s launch assessment points to a broader Marathon

In a behind-the-scenes video, Bungie developers said the team underestimated how difficult the launch experience would be for many players. The constant loop of failure did not connect with as many people as expected, leaving death as the first step for some players and the only step for others.

“We all thought we were gonna bring extraction to the masses, and we didn’t,” the developers say. “We built very much an extraction shooter as you’ve ever seen one.” Bungie still wants to preserve the tension of its PvPvE runs, but the planned dedicated PvE mode, wider range of PvP options, improved onboarding, and additional story are meant to give players more ways into the world.

What March adds to Marathon

March’s update will bring together permanent PvE, PvP, and PvEvP activities alongside a new onboarding experience. A refactored Cradle and deeper shell progression will give Runners more control over how their characters develop, while focused questlines and additional narrative will provide more reasons to return to Tau Ceti IV.

Bungie also plans to add new alien combatants and an entirely new zone. The studio described March as the point where the different parts of Marathon begin operating as a connected whole, although it does not represent the end of development. More updates are planned beyond 2027.

Shell progression gets a deeper role

Runners are bio-cybernetic mercenaries whose consciousness can be uploaded into a new shell after death. Bungie wants that system to become more central to each run, with every shell offering a clearer role, set of capabilities, and progression path.

The planned Cradle changes should give players more control over their arsenal of shells instead of treating progression as a single track. That approach fits the wider roadmap, which aims to let players prepare for different kinds of encounters and return to the fight with a build suited to the moment.

Tau Ceti IV will become more dangerous

Marathon’s world will also receive more narrative and stranger threats. Bungie wants repeated runs through Tau Ceti IV to reveal more about the setting and strengthen its ties to the original Marathon trilogy. The Pfhor will return in a transformed form, while new combatants will test how crews coordinate during difficult encounters.

The new zone will take Runners deeper into the unknown, but Bungie is holding back details about what waits there. The studio also said it is building encounters that can leave a lasting impression, whether players face a massive enemy or fight their way out after a run goes wrong.

Nightfall Refresh and Symbiosis come first

The immediate step is the October 6 Nightfall Refresh, which will focus on progression, rewards, and the live experience. It is scheduled to include a progression and economy reset, a new Rewards Pass, quality-of-life improvements, live tuning, and the temporary return of Vault Breaker.

Symbiosis will follow on December 8 with Marathon’s first permanent PvE mode, an experimental Team Deathmatch mode, an expanded Perimeter, the new Bishop shell, improved onboarding, and a social space with a firing range. Perimeter will receive new routes, points of interest, and a pinnacle encounter featuring the Tick Queen.

Bungie is also moving away from strict seasonal releases. Future updates will be paced around the size of the work and what the team can support, rather than a calendar that forces every release into the same structure. October and December are the setup, while March 2027 is where the studio expects the pieces to function together.
