Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth will launch on PlayStation 5 on September 18, bringing a snowy storybook adventure where Moomintroll wakes from hibernation before the rest of his family and tries to bring spring back to Moominvalley.
Hyper Games shared the launch date in its PlayStation Blog announcement. The Norway-based indie studio’s second Moomin game will send Moomintroll looking for a way to wake his family and reunite with his best friend, Snufkin.

A storybook world with moving snow
The game’s visual style combines 3D shapes with painted 2D elements to create a watercolor-inspired world. Hyper Games is building much of the look in Unity through shader and texture work, giving the environments a soft, illustrated appearance without turning them into flat backdrops.
Snow is designed to respond to the world around it. A deformable layer sits over the simple terrain and reacts when characters or other objects interact with it, allowing the snow to shift, rise, and fall with a sense of weight.

Tove Jansson’s influence reaches the details
The adventure draws from Tove Jansson’s art, characters, and stories. Familiar touches appear throughout the world, including references to the Ancestor and the Hattifatteners, while Too-Ticky is included as a character inspired by Jansson’s life partner, Tuulikki Pietilä.
Hyper Games also wants the game to carry the emotional range associated with the Moomins, pairing a gentle presentation with a story about winter, loneliness, courage, and finding a way forward when everyone else is still asleep.
