VisionQuest Is Being Treated as a Vision Story First, Not Just a Trilogy Finale
Paul Bettany said White Vision begins as a weapon and ends by seeking agency, while Terry Matalas already has ideas for 10 more seasons.
VisionQuest will approach the end of the WandaVision trilogy as a new chapter for Vision rather than a simple final installment. Showrunner Terry Matalas said the Disney Plus series will function as a follow-up to WandaVision while telling a story that can stand on its own when it arrives on October 14.
The trilogy also includes Agatha All Along, but completing that larger structure was not the main point of Matalas’ work on the series. In his comments about the series, he described VisionQuest as a story focused on understanding Vision in ways the films and earlier series could not fully cover.
White Vision gets a deeper origin story
The series follows White Vision, who has been given Vision’s memories and is now trying to work out who he is. His search leads into a mind palace where he encounters other Marvel artificial intelligences and his creator, Ultron. A bounty hunter is also tracking him, while the arrival of his son adds another complication to a life already built around questions of identity.
Paul Bettany has given that identity crisis a clearer direction. In an interview with SFX magazine, he said, “We start off the show where we left him as White Vision, who has been repurposed as a weapon,” and that by the end, Vision has “escaped the confines of whoever repurposed him” and is looking for agency. Bettany called the ending an exciting springboard for whatever Vision might do in the future.
That focus gives VisionQuest room to examine Vision’s past and origin without requiring the show to serve as a final chapter for every character connected to the franchise. Matalas said the story may reach further back than viewers previously believed about where Vision came from.
Ultron returns alongside Vision
James Spader’s Ultron will also be back, giving the series another direct connection to Vision’s past. Spader said Ultron has spent the time since his defeat in Avengers: Age of Ultron consuming information from the internet, television, and history while painting. He described the relationship between Ultron and Vision as a “father-son-therapist-psychopath relationship.”
Wanda Maximoff will not return
Elizabeth Olsen will not return as Wanda Maximoff in the series. Matalas has confirmed that Vision will know Wanda is dead during the new story. He also stressed that a late-season moment should not be read as a tease for Wanda’s return, keeping the focus on Vision rather than reopening that part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Matalas is already thinking beyond the first season. He said he, Paul Bettany, and James Spader were ready to continue with 10 more seasons after production wrapped, though any continuation will depend on Marvel Studios. That enthusiasm is not a renewal announcement, but it does make clear that the creative team sees more room for Vision’s story.
