Donkey Kong 64 finally gets a native PC release from a team that says it used no generative AI

DK64 Rekongpiled adds widescreen and high-resolution support, mouse controls, and mod support, but requires an original US ROM to run.

Donkey Kong 64 has finally made the jump to native PC hardware. DK64 Rekongpiled is now playable on Windows, Mac, and Linux, and the programmers behind it say they used no generative AI during development.

The project, released on August 29, recompiles or translates the original game’s code for PC hardware instead of running it through emulation. It uses the N64: Recompiled tool, which converts Nintendo 64 code into C code that can then be compiled for other platforms. Players must provide their own original Donkey Kong 64 ROM to use it, and the current version supports only the US release. The files are available through the project’s GitHub release page.

What DK64 Rekongpiled brings to PC

Nearly everything from Nintendo’s 1999 platformer remains in place, including its fuzzy 3D visuals, bouncy soundtrack, and famously demanding collection of tasks. The difference is that the game can now run in native 4K, at high resolutions, and at unlocked frame rates beyond 60 FPS on suitable hardware. Widescreen support gives the adventure more room to stretch its legs, while mouse support has also been added for PC players.

The wider display support extends to the cutscenes, which have been updated to work correctly with broader aspect ratios. The minigames have been adjusted for lag-free gameplay, and lower input delay makes the controls feel more responsive than they did on the original console.

Mod support is included as well, with DK64: Randomizer planned for a later release. Several contributors previously worked on the DK64 Randomizer, giving the recompilation project a direct connection to one of the game’s most established fan projects. The result is available through the official DK64 Rekongpiled website.

The project’s no-AI stance is part of its identity. Contributor 2dos wrote that “no generative AI [was] used at any point in the process.” The team also says its contributors have spent more than a decade working with and tinkering with Donkey Kong 64’s backend code.

The release trailer keeps the technical achievement from becoming too serious. In its goofy story, King K. Rool learns that a group of programmers has defeated his plan to keep the classic game off PC. His henchman is so stunned that the game runs in 4K at 200 frames per second that he abandons his boss to play it himself.

For fans who have waited years to play Donkey Kong 64 outside its original console environment, this offers a new way to revisit the full adventure while keeping its original personality intact.
