Scott Pilgrim EX’s Back in the Band DLC Adds 3 Playable Heroes
Tribute Games details how Stephen Stills, Kim Pine, and Knives Chau received distinct animations and combat identities.

Scott Pilgrim EX now has three more playable heroes, with Stephen Stills, Kim Pine, and Knives Chau joining the roster through the Back in the Band DLC. The expansion is available now on PlayStation and reunites the full Sex Bob-omb lineup.
The trio needed to feel like natural additions rather than simple character swaps. In a PlayStation Blog feature, Tribute Games 2D animators Samantha Lhoir and Artem Samoilov explained how the team used animation, visual design, and combat mechanics to give each character a clear identity.
That work starts before a fight even begins. The expanded Character Select screen had to keep the cast balanced while directing attention toward the three new additions. Their idle animations also needed to communicate personality before players selected them.
Kim Pine projects quiet confidence with a hint of attitude. Knives Chau is full of restless energy, looking ready to spring into action at any moment. Stephen Stills seems relaxed, although players paying close attention may catch a brief flash of surprise in his expression.
Those reactions may last only a fraction of a second, but they give the characters more life. Tribute Games treats poses, transitions, facial expressions, secondary motion, and small visual effects as chances to communicate emotion instead of simply moving a sprite from one point to another.
Early concept sketches helped establish each character’s silhouette, posture, and personality before the art team refined them into the final pixel art. Small changes to a stance, pose, or expression improved readability while keeping the designs faithful to Bryan Lee O’Malley’s characters.
Seeing those ideas move from sketches to finished sprites also shows how much iteration goes into making the cast feel natural. The goal was not only to recreate familiar personalities, but to carry them into gameplay and every animation on screen.
Knives Chau fights with speed and reach
Knives Chau brings the most distinct combat rhythm of the new trio. She is designed as a fast hit-and-run fighter who relies on speed, mobility, and constant pressure.
Her scarf works as both a visual signature and a weapon, extending the reach of her attacks while supporting her acrobatic movement. Rapid knife strikes let Knives weave through enemies before darting away, giving her a very different feel from the rest of the roster.
