State of Decay 3 will expand into closed beta playtests before the end of 2026, giving more players a chance to try Undead Labs’ zombie survival game ahead of its planned 2027 launch. Registration is already open for players who want to be considered for a future test.
The new phase follows an alpha program that began in April 2026. Undead Labs plans to gradually bring in more participants and add more platforms as development continues, although joining the registration list does not guarantee access. Players can sign up through the State of Decay 3 playtest page.
Alpha feedback is guiding the next test
The first test wave gave the team feedback on combat against multiple freaks, along with changes to lighting, sound effects, weather, and the game’s overall visuals. Testers also responded to expanded clothing options, glasses and beards, plus character movement that feels smoother and more reactive.
Kevin Patzelt, creative director at Undead Labs, said in the Xbox Wire announcement that the team needs more testing because State of Decay 3 features its largest map yet and untethered multiplayer. He added that players who miss the first opportunity should have more chances to participate throughout the year, including those who are new to the series.
A larger world with harsher consequences
State of Decay 3 is built around a much larger shared open world than its predecessors, with survivors trying to establish themselves in a dangerous wilderness. Players will manage multiple communities, develop settlements, and make decisions that affect who joins their group and how it survives.
Co-op combat encounters and the game’s new permadeath systems are among the areas that will benefit from continued testing. When a longtime survivor dies, the narrative systems are designed to give that loss lasting weight instead of treating it like a routine setback.
State of Decay 3 is available to wishlist through the Xbox game page. It will launch in 2027 for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, cloud, Steam, and PlayStation 5, and it will be included with Game Pass. Xbox Play Anywhere will also allow players to use the game on console and PC at no additional cost.
