Gray Zone Warfare Brings Ivan Buchta Into Its Creative Leadership
The former Arma creative director will start contributing with Update 0.6, leaving the upcoming 0.5 overhaul outside his remit.
MADFINGER Games has added Ivan Buchta to the Gray Zone Warfare leadership team. Buchta joins the tactical shooter as associate creative director, bringing experience from the Arma franchise and DayZ. He worked on Bohemia Interactive’s Arma series from 2006, taking on several roles before becoming its creative director.
His work will focus on the game’s sandbox experience and world-building systems. Buchta will operate alongside MADFINGER’s leadership team as the studio continues developing the non-linear structure that sits at the center of Gray Zone Warfare. The tactical shooter is set on the tropical island of Lamang in Southeast Asia, with heavily armed gangs and mercenaries among the threats players face.
MADFINGER says Buchta’s work will begin with Update 0.6
The appointment comes after Gray Zone Warfare’s 0.4 update, known as Spearhead, which overhauled the task structure and combat flow in February 2026, and ahead of the next major overhaul. Buchta will not contribute to Update 0.5, but MADFINGER says his work will begin with Update 0.6. MADFINGER expects 0.5 to arrive in the coming months, but has not announced a specific release date.
That leaves the upcoming 0.5 update without Buchta’s input. MADFINGER has not shared the full scope of the overhaul yet, though the studio has started looking at hideout mechanics and a crafting system. Neither feature is currently in the game, and neither has been confirmed as part of 0.5.
Gray Zone Warfare entered Early Access on April 30, 2024, and reached more than one million sales before the end of that year. The Night Ops patch added performance work and a day-night cycle, while a PvP-focused update in March 2025 introduced outposts that factions could contest for territory control and force projection.
MADFINGER Games CEO Marek Rebas said Buchta’s decades of experience creating military games made him a natural fit for the studio’s plans. Rebas also pointed to Buchta’s background as a reason for optimism about the direction of Gray Zone Warfare.
Buchta said the project’s potential and ambition attracted him to the team. He believes MADFINGER has already built a strong foundation for a tactical sandbox, and he plans to draw on his previous experience as the studio develops the game’s world and systems further.
For now, the next major milestone is Update 0.5, while Buchta’s first direct contributions are planned for 0.6. The coming updates should give players a clearer idea of how his approach affects Gray Zone Warfare’s long-term sandbox design.
