The Elder Scrolls 6’s Sentinel Theory Gets a One-Word Nod From a Former Bethesda Developer
Eight asterisks from Xbox CEO Asha Sharma and Bethesda have fans weighing Sentinel, High Rock, Starfall, and other possible names.

The Elder Scrolls 6 has another possible setting theory, and former Bethesda developer Michael Kirkbride has given the idea a tiny but attention-grabbing nod. His entire response was “Yep,” but that was enough to keep Sentinel at the center of the latest fan theories.
Following the August 11 Xbox leadership visit to Bethesda, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma’s live playthrough became the focus of renewed discussion. Sharma used eight asterisks when referring to the game’s subtitle, and Bethesda matched that count in its response. An X post about the eight-asterisk clue helped fans connect the symbols to possible eight-letter names from the Elder Scrolls universe.
Why Sentinel keeps coming up
Sentinel fits the eight-letter pattern and is one of Hammerfell’s nine major kingdoms; the name is also used for a capital city in the region, giving the theory a connection to one of the areas fans have long discussed for the next game. Hammerfell itself does not fit the apparent clue, but that does not rule out the region if Sentinel is meant to identify a city or a more specific part of it.
A separate clue comes from Starfield. During character creation, the employee number 190514-2009140512 appears at the bottom of the screen. Split into two-digit values—19, 05, 14, 20, 09, 14, 05, and 12—and converted to alphabet positions, it spells S-E-N-T-I-N-E-L. Because Starfield and The Elder Scrolls 6 were announced at the same time, fans have wondered whether Bethesda could have settled on the subtitle before Starfield launched in 2023. The number remains suggestive rather than official evidence.
Fans raised Sentinel in a TESVI Reddit post, where the possibility caught Kirkbride’s attention. When someone suggested the name, the former Bethesda developer replied “Yep” in a follow-up comment.
Fans have also connected Sentinel to a reported working title, Guardian. Because the words carry similar meanings, some fans see the connection as a possible bridge between the codename and the name Bethesda eventually chooses. The working title and that link remain unconfirmed.
That reply is not confirmation from Bethesda. Kirkbride’s comment makes the name more fun to consider, particularly because of his connection to the series, but an eight-letter match is still only a clue without an official explanation.
Other eight-letter Elder Scrolls names fit too
Sentinel is far from the only possibility. High Rock reaches eight letters when its space is removed, while Starfall has also appeared in fan discussion because of Starfall Bay. The latter suggestion was highlighted in an X post about possible subtitles.
A UESP roundup of the eight-symbol theory also points to names such as Orsinium, Balfiera, and Dominion. Orsinium would connect the game to the Orsimer and their ancestral homeland, while Aldmeris could send the story toward older Elder Scrolls mythology. Each option carries a different set of lore implications, which is exactly why a handful of asterisks has created so much conversation.
Development details remain limited
Beyond the naming theory, The Elder Scrolls 6 has reached a playable state and is being built with Creation Engine 3. Bethesda later called the project its main priority, while Todd Howard said in November 2025 that it was still a long way off. During a July 2 Bloomberg Q&A, Jason Schreier estimated that the game was at least two years away, which would put a possible release around 2028 at the earliest. That remains an estimate, not a date from Bethesda.
For now, Bethesda has not confirmed what the symbols represent, which region the game will use, or whether they refer to the subtitle at all. With no public launch date either, fans are left examining every small detail around The Elder Scrolls 6—and Kirkbride’s one-word answer has given Sentinel another moment in the spotlight.
