Pokémon GO’s August 10–16, 2026 raid lineup features both Groudon and Mega Garchomp, giving Trainers two bosses to prepare for during the same week. Their counter pools overlap just enough to be tempting, but the strongest type plan is different for each one.
The good news is that the type chart does most of the work. Groudon is a pure Ground-type Pokémon, while Mega Garchomp combines Dragon and Ground typing. Ice is useful against both, with Mega Garchomp taking extra damage because both of its types are weak to Ice.

How to build a Groudon raid party
Groudon gives Trainers three useful counter lanes. Water attackers are a natural choice for a team built around consistent damage, while Grass attackers offer another strong answer to its Ground typing. Ice attackers also work well and become especially handy for anyone preparing for both raids.
There is no need to force one species into every slot. Pick the highest-level attackers with matching Fast and Charged moves, then mix Water, Grass, and Ice options according to the Pokémon already powered up in the collection. A full team of weaker counters is not automatically better than a focused party built around a Trainer’s best available attackers.
Mega Garchomp’s biggest weakness
Ice should be the first choice against Mega Garchomp. Its Dragon and Ground typing makes Ice super effective against both parts of its defensive profile, giving Ice attackers a clear edge in this matchup.
Dragon and Fairy attackers are useful alternatives when the Ice roster is thin. They target Mega Garchomp’s Dragon typing, but Water and Grass attackers that work against Groudon should not be treated as the main answer here. The two raid parties may share Ice attackers, yet they should not be copied as one universal team.
One roster can cover both raids
Trainers trying to prepare with limited resources can start by building a strong Ice core. Those attackers contribute against Groudon and become the centerpiece of a Mega Garchomp party. Add Water or Grass attackers for Groudon, then keep Dragon or Fairy options ready for Mega Garchomp.
Individual counter rankings can change based on moves, levels, and the attackers available to each Trainer. The type matchups remain the steady part of the plan: Water, Grass, or Ice for Groudon, and Ice first with Dragon or Fairy support for Mega Garchomp.
