Xbox is deploying an update that addresses the bug that left some players unable to launch games, including titles installed from physical discs. The fix will become mandatory on August 17, according to Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet.
The problem started when an underlying service required for Xbox Home Console sharing, Game Pass purchased content, and some PC scenarios failed after a system update. A separate issue inside the Xbox client software stack then caused additional license checks to fail, creating cascading errors that blocked game launches and caused problems with game library enumeration for some users.
Xbox acknowledged the wider service outage early on July 27 after players were unable to sign in, view their libraries, or launch some games and apps. The disruption lasted roughly 15 to 16 hours, with about 13 hours passing between Xbox’s public acknowledgment and its resolution notice.
Xbox is bringing the failed service under its control
Van Vliet said Xbox will take over the service, which had previously operated outside Xbox. Engineers are also hardening the service and its infrastructure before future updates. The bug-fix release began rolling out on August 10, while a firmware update was rolling out to Xbox users during the week of August 10. The mandatory deadline means some players may not receive the final required version until August 17.
Van Vliet previously apologized for the “unacceptable situation” in an earlier post. In his August 10 follow-up update, he said Xbox’s engineering and operations teams were reviewing the wider software stack for ways to improve the stability of its products and services.
He also said Xbox would share more information in the coming weeks and months as it introduces new features alongside quality-of-life system updates. For now, the immediate focus is making sure the service failure and the client-side licensing issue do not combine to prevent players from starting games again.
